New Exhibition at the Linenhall - The Darker Wood

Lucy McKenna - The Darker Wood
VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 3rd - Saturday 25th February
An exhibition of photographic prints, drawings, papercut installation and video, based on the notion of fairytales, myths and legends as expressions of the human condition. The Darker Wood is the result of a residency undertaken by the artist in 2010 on Toronto Island, Canada. Works created there were in response to the island itself, its history and landscape, in particular to the clearance of the island for intended parkland in the 1960s. The damaged trees that remained from that action became a major influence, as did the Grimm brothers’, The Juniper Tree and Hans Christian Andersen’s The Dryad, both fairytales involving the embodiment of human emotions and actions in trees. A graduate of NCAD, Lucy McKenna is currently based in Kilkenny. She has exhibited in Ireland, the US and Canada.
